The Rise of Digital Reading

The Rise of Digital Reading
Books have been around for centuries and they are not going anywhere any time soon. However, the way that we read books may change over the next few decades.

The rise of technology has changed our everyday lives as almost everything has now gone digital. This includes books, as there are now numerous ways to read a book in the palm of your hand.

The Amazon Kindle

The Amazon Kindle, as seen in the photo above, is a small tablet that allows the reader to access books, magazines, newspapers, and even comic books/graphic novels on this device. Users can change the font, font size, background, and users can highlight and note sections within a book. This is something that sets it apart from physical books, as these are things you cannot change in a physical book. All of these features can make reading accessible for readers, as these adjustments/features do not cost extra.

If the user has Amazon Prime, they are able to read Amazon Original Stories with their subscription. Amazon Prime users are also able to access certain books with their subscription as well. Kindle also offers Kindle Unlimited, where the user can pay $9.99 a month to have unlimited access to over 3 million books, magazines, audiobooks, and more. This can be cheaper than buying numerous physical copies of books and the user can cancel at any time. This subscription is not required by Kindle users.

There are also free books that are offered on the Kindle that does not require a subscription. There are also free samples of books, both free and members only, that allows the user to read the first few pages of a book.

The Kindle app can be used on phones, tablets, and computers. This allows users to log into their accounts at any moment and pick up where they left off in a book. This is very convenient, especially if a user's Kindle is broken, dead, or lost. This makes the Kindle different from physical books because if a physical book gets damaged or lost, it would be difficult to replace or buy a new one.

The Nook

The Barnes and Noble Nook is a device similar to the Amazon Kindle. You are able to download and read books the same way you would a Kindle. There is a Nook app, which runs similar to the way the Kindle app works. You are able to access your downloaded books on this app on any device.

What sets Nook and Kindle apart is the subscription fee. Nook does not have a reoccurring subscription fee like kindle Unlimited does. Nor can you use Amazon Prime to buy books for the Nook. Each book needs to be individually bought. However there are free books available on the Nook, just like the Kindle.

Devices like the Nook and Kindle are extremely useful for readers who cannot carry or have space for physical books. People are now able to read in the dark, have all of their books in one place, and be able to read on any device.

I, personally, have used the Amazon Kindle, and it has come in handy on many occasions. I highly recommend reading off of one of these devices f you are able to afford it.

Digital Writing

Just like there are digital ways of reading a book, there are digital ways of writing as well. There are websites dedicated for upcoming authors, or people who enjoy writing for fun, where they can post their stories and receive feedback from readers.

Most of these websites are free and require no subscriptions. And the writers tend to not get paid for their work or have to pay the website. However, it is helpful for authors to get feedback from readers and help them improve their writing skills. It also always writers to easily communicate with each other.

Some websites that I have read off of are:
  • Wattpad
  • WEBook
  • Scriggler
